Review :  Dr. Adrian Helmsley, part of a worldwide geophysical team investigating the effect on the earth of radiation from unprecedented solar storms, learns that the earth's core is heating up. He warns U.S. President Thomas Wilson that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and that without proper preparations for saving a fraction of the world's population, the entire race is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis stumbles on the same information. While the world's leaders race to build "arks" to escape the impending cataclysm, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. Sivapuram, Telugu Movie (2009)

Description :  Sivapuram is the cinematic adaptation of the award winning novel written by Sunil Parameshwaram. The movie delves deep into the supernatural elements including spirits and tells the story of a sorcerer, who is an expert black-magician. Set in the lushly locales of rural Kerala, the entire movie is an interesting tale of good versus evil told in the backdrop of a mysterious Shivakavu (snake temple) and the Nagamanikyam (diamond) guarded by its serpents. 

While Manoj K Jeyan as the black magician Digambaran spooks the daylights out of you, Prithviraj’s role as Ananthan who is a disbeliever caught in the tangle of supernatural elements is admirable. Kalabhavan Mani as the blind martial arts expert, Kavya Madhavan, Riya Sen, Revathi and Cochin Hanifa play convincing roles.

Santosh Sivan’s direction and camera must have been fresh and a treat for the eyes when the movie was released. Now it is all botched and makes it look like the entire movie was made in bad lighting. Blame it on the picture quality that is more than four years old.

There is no denial of the fact that Malayalam and Tamil have striking similarities as spoken languages. But that is not an excuse for bad dubbing and atrocious borrowing of Malayalam words into the Tamil version. And the lip syncs obviously do not match either - same for the beautiful songs that were once chartbusters in M G Radhakrishnan’s music. 

Saby Cyril was to direct Anandabhadram that was later taken over by Santosh Sivan. Sivan’s screenplay and taut direction are one of the very many pluses of the (original version) movie. 

If you ask us, there is no point wasting money on a movie that’s being telecast every other weekend on the Malayalam television channels.

Abashiri Family, Hollywood Movie (2009)

Review :   The series deals with the adventures of the Abashiri family, a clan of criminals who are feared by the police and other criminals alike, as they are a destructive force to be reckoned with. Although they are virtually unstoppable, they do not have great desires and many of their plans are normally minor and sometimes get undone by their own foolishness. That is unless they are attacked, at which point they will retaliate with full force, normally with deadly consequences for their enemies.

As the series progress the tone of the series becomes less crime-focused and becomes more a gag comedy with strong touches of eroticism. The series was originally conceived by Nagai as a form of protest and parody of the controversy that arose with Harenchi Gakuen. While having a grim tone at the beginning, the series lightens up as it progresses, although the graphic violence remains through most of it but becoming less frequent.

The series remained popular in its original run until Nagai decided to drop it along with other series that he was doing at the time in order to concentrate in the Devilman manga. Years later, a single one-shot story was published and has since been included in all new tankōbon series. A special crossover one-shot with Cutie Honey was also published in 2009, in commemoration of the 40 years anniversary of the magazine Shōnen Champion, where both series debuted in manga.

Deadfall Trail, Hollywood Movie (2009)

Review :  The story centers around three men, John and Julian (older/experienced trails-men) and Paul (much younger and very inexperienced), going on a ritual trip deep into the mountains. They take nothing but the clothes on their backs, forcing themselves to survive on the land itself. John is the leader and has taught everything he knows to Julian. They have been on these outings many times before. Julian hates the idea of taking Paul along, and Paul must prove to him that he is more than capable. In one gross out scene Paul drinks his own urine after running out of water. Slade Hall, Shane Dean and Cavin Gray Schneider play off each other in a realistic manner, lending credibility to the storyline. Things go bad when John gets hurt, and they must get him back to civilization before he dies. Of course things go from bad to worse when Julian begins to lose his mind. He winds up taking John’s life to spare him the pain he is in. So far drama, but now comes the horror: He does so by bashing his head in with a large rock. Paul realizes how gone Julian is and now must escape if he wants to live. The hunt is on. This may sound exciting, but be warned this is a slow moving film. The first half is about how these men use their skills to survive off the land, but several montages set to Jason Camiolo’s masterful score will keep you interested. Simply hearing this music will conjure up images of wooded hills and grassy meadows.
