Ekti Tarar Khonje, Bengali Movie (2010)

Saturday, November 13, 2010

Review :  The film is all about love, betrayal and crime. It is very difficult to categorize the film Because though it is being termed as a crime thriller, yet it is not a crime thriller in true sense and it does have it’s share of drama and moments between Abhi and Rani. This is Avik Mukherjee’s first film as a director by being cinematographer for such wonderful films like Chokher Bali - A Passion Play (DVD), Raincoat (DVD), Patalghar (DVD) and Antaheen (DVD). The cinematography of Antaheen was wonderful to say the least and visually captivating. This film is of a different kind and can not compared to Antaheen by way of it’s cinematography. The lead character is Abhi someone who dreams of becoming a star, has stars in his eyes and so lands up in a city like Kolkata to make his dreams come true. He stays at a rented place, has an eccentric landlord who stays indoors the entire day, plays the Esraj, knows his Shakespeare well and goes out at night. He is sin love with the landlord’s niece Rani. He gets trapped in the big bad world of crime unknowingly and from there, it sis point of no return. At the same time he also gets a role as a second lead in a Bengali film. This is where Shayan has acted well where he as Abhi is shown to be in a dilemma. He is at a crossroad and he just can not see a straight path. Therefore all he can do is to depend on his lady love There is a blast at the building from where the gang operates and Abhi’s boss dies along with other gang members. Abhi’s is at peace at last. What is important is the handling of the film. The suspense remains till last and one has to see the film to know the real identity of Abhi’s boss. It can not be revealed and is in fact a surprise element of the film.

Angshumaner Chhobi, Bengali Movie (2009)

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Review :   Angshuman, a young film director, comes back from Italy after eight years, having studied cinema there, to make his first film. He puts up a determined fight against all obstacles to complete his film. He picks an unusual script on which he is not prepared to compromise. The story is about a 72-year-old painter who is suffering from dementia. The painter has an illiterate ayah who looks after him. Anghsuman chooses an old actor Pradyut Mukherjee, a matinee idol at one time who has cut himself from the mainstream as much as he has cut himself away from films. Anghsuman persuades the actor to portray the character of the old painter. For the role of the ayah, the new director chooses Madhura, an actress who won the National Award for her debut film but lost her way somewhere in the maze of commercial cinema and then receded into the background. When Angshuman approaches her, she is reduced to a jatra artist who is a social recluse.

Le Chakka, Bengali Movie (2010)

Thursday, October 21, 2010

Review : Le Chhakka promised to bring back the Bangaliana and how! It has ghoti vs bangal fight, north Kolkata vs south Kolkata cultural divide and cricket (the para cricket version) in its premise spiced up with politics, another important staple of Bengali life.

The film unfolds with the disastrous (but not that unexpected) loss of North Kolkata’s Darjipara 11 Bullets to a south Kolkata locality team whose bowling attack was led by the deadly Abir (Dev). The drama begins as Abir’s ghoti  father (Biswajit Chakraborty) fulfils his long-cherished dream of shifting to North Kolkata, the place of his maternal uncles, full of childhood memories, with a much-unwilling Abir and his bangal mother (Laboni) in tow....
