Prathi Roju, Telugu Movie (2010)

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Review :   Prathi Roju looks like a cross between a bad movie and no movie. With nothing but a germ of an idea - which has been copied, in the first place - to hold it together, the film is such a vacant piece of work it's a wonder someone decided to release it at all.
The makers deal with the subject of terrorism - the film is the 68,746th C-movie milking of the bomb blasts and Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park - and, unfortunately, include the audience in the deal. The story opens with a bunch of street-smart youngsters (Bindu Madhavi, etc.) making crude bombs and plotting to leave them all over town. However, there's no need to panic: they're not going to be that successful in terrorizing people, since this movie wasn't released in many theatres, and very few are going to be watching their acting skills.
When a couple of shoot-outs and minor explosions send the city into a tizzy, a police officer (Ravi Babu) is deployed to investigate the case. His prying leads to arrests for our protagonists, and the end of the first half of the flick for the audiences. There's an interval that helps you recap what happened so far so you can follow the rest of the movie better, but we wouldn't recommend that unless you're trying to make yourself mentally ill.
Prathi Roju is an astonishingly amateur flick. Now we don't have anything against amateur flicks, but when a film is so stupid that it starts making you end every sentence of yours with a "Why?", people do get provoked into using language that is not amateur - and definitely not legal.
As for Prathi Roju, it feels like the rough sketch of a school play. The story is silly, there are loopholes galore, the dialogues are like a conversation between your 2-year-old nephew and your neighbour's pet dog, and the music sounds like a conversation between your neighbour's pet dog and your 2-year-old nephew.
And the performances are so bad they make it look like the actors screwed the film and not all of the above. Basically, everything about this movie makes everything else look good. However, Ravi Babu and Harshavardhan are the saving grace of the flick. Bindu Madhavi is surpassed by miles by her newcomer colleagues, and M S Narayana is in a sad comedy track at the end of which he's made to weep.
Overall, this film cannot be watched without professional supervision, so stay away till you find some.

Sivapuram, Telugu Movie (2009)

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Description :  Sivapuram is the cinematic adaptation of the award winning novel written by Sunil Parameshwaram. The movie delves deep into the supernatural elements including spirits and tells the story of a sorcerer, who is an expert black-magician. Set in the lushly locales of rural Kerala, the entire movie is an interesting tale of good versus evil told in the backdrop of a mysterious Shivakavu (snake temple) and the Nagamanikyam (diamond) guarded by its serpents.

While Manoj K Jeyan as the black magician Digambaran spooks the daylights out of you, Prithviraj’s role as Ananthan who is a disbeliever caught in the tangle of supernatural elements is admirable. Kalabhavan Mani as the blind martial arts expert, Kavya Madhavan, Riya Sen, Revathi and Cochin Hanifa play convincing roles.

Santosh Sivan’s direction and camera must have been fresh and a treat for the eyes when the movie was released. Now it is all botched and makes it look like the entire movie was made in bad lighting. Blame it on the picture quality that is more than four years old.

There is no denial of the fact that Malayalam and Tamil have striking similarities as spoken languages. But that is not an excuse for bad dubbing and atrocious borrowing of Malayalam words into the Tamil version. And the lip syncs obviously do not match either - same for the beautiful songs that were once chartbusters in M G Radhakrishnan’s music.

Saby Cyril was to direct Anandabhadram that was later taken over by Santosh Sivan. Sivan’s screenplay and taut direction are one of the very many pluses of the (original version) movie.

If you ask us, there is no point wasting money on a movie that’s being telecast every other weekend on the Malayalam television channels.

Yuva, Telugu Movie (2004)

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Review :  Manirathnam is perhaps the director of the 90s and 2000s who has got the pulse of the people right. He also knows how to make serious and sensitive movies within the matrix of commercial considerations. His products are fun as well as serious.

In the event, it is little surprise that his forthcoming release Yuva (Azhutha Ezhuthu in Tamil) has generated great expectations across Andhra Pradesh. The music of A R Rehman is already a rage.

As usual, getting bite-sized morsels on Manis film is almost next to impossible. All the artistes and technicians are religiously reticent while talking about the film. The fact that Yuva is being simultaneously made in Hindi under the same name is adding to the curiosity value.

According to many reports doing the rounds, Yuva is said to be based on a Mexican movie. There also sources who say that the film takes off from the life and times of a gifted student at Osmania University. Quite simply, the film has three strands ---- of three different youths with three distinctive approaches to life. Not surprisingly, their paths cross each others and their life is not same any more.

Mani leads the cast with his find and favorite Madhavan (in a menacing close cut that he kept under wraps for several months). He is a product of bindas Chennai where anything goes. He doesn't believe in the normal rules that govern the society. For this tough-talking, threat-pouring rowdy anything goes in life. But his weakness is his Brahmin wife Meera Jasmine. Naturally it is a love marriage.

Bhairava, Telugu Movie (2010)

Friday, October 29, 2010

Review : Bhairava is a film with a habitual subject of a super cop and goons. Though the director made an attempt to show novelty in the theme, it went astray due to the lack of control over the screenplay. At times the scenes of the film cause a notion about the film that it might have been made with a handicam. The protagonist's death defying stunts and the diction in the provincial dialect are good enough to cause wolf whistles from the front bench viewers. The drawn out dialogues of the central character and the ripened discourses of the kid generate annoyance. The comedy segment of the film is an absolute squander.

The effort to consolidate the protagonist's character, limited the left behind characters to the range of buffoonish ones. The female protagonist is subject to sporadic appearances and it seems her character is slotted in for a laid-back cause. The depiction of the antagonist in a new-fangled mode is okay. But, that alone doesn't work for the story.

Desamuduru, Telugu Movie (2007)

Review : Unlike other young heroes, Allu Arjun has a clean track record. He is giving successive hits right from his debut. Especially, he is very careful in selecting subjects and is not limiting himself to a particular image. He is also not in a hurry to do films and is doing only one film at a time to concentrate on the character.

He had the ability to shake his legs with much élan and ease. Now he toned up his body to suit the macho man image for his latest flick 'Desamuduru'. Puri Jagannath who rewrote the history with his last film 'Pokiri' maintained his style again and proved that he is on a winning streak and ensured the film to achieve hit talk right from the first show.

Bala (Allu Arjun) is a programme director in MAA TV. He works in crime division and once he goes to Dhoolpet to shoot the illicit breweries. In the process, he bashes Murugan (Subbaraju), son of a notorious arrack smuggler Tambi Durai (Pradeep Rawat).

To save him from getting killed by Tambi Durai, the channel staff sends Bala to Kulu Manali, where Bala meets a sanyasin called Vaishali (Haansika). Bala loses Vaishali at first sight and finally succeeds in winning her love. By the time Bala wanted to take Vaishali to Hyderabad, she gets kidnapped by some goons.

Description: The film is basically a mature romantic treat and given the depth of feelings, it strikes the raw nerve of many who have been through a similar experience in real life. While the first half is on the lighter side of emotions, things get intense during the second half and unknowingly, the audience gets dragged into the story. This is high on technical values and production aspects so departments like cinematography, screenplay, editing are masterly. This clubbed with mature performances has given a new appeal to the movie. On the commercial aspect, the film will appeal big time to the A-class audience and given the experience of the movie, perhaps the masses can also pick up a straw or two.
